The Mets won’t have Dellin Betances back in their bullpen for at least another six weeks, and questions linger whether the righty will make another appearance this season.
Betances was moved to the 60-day IL on Saturday after he was sidelined with a right shoulder impingement after his first appearance of the season. He allowed one run in that outing, and was shut down shortly after.
Betances, formerly one of the best relievers in all of baseball, was seeking a bounceback season after he allowed 12 hits and 10 earned runs in 11.2 innings of work last year, his first with the Mets. He was held to just 0.2 innings in 2019 due to lat and shoulder injuries before he suffered an Achilles injury in his first appearance of that season.
The Mets were hoping a healthy Betances could return to form this year and rediscover his dominance from his days with the Yankees, when he was an All-Star for four straight seasons. But his velocity was significantly lower than his career norm, and his first meaningful appearance didn’t offer reason for optimism. Now, it will be a long time before Betances makes another appearance in New York, if at all.
Betances is in the final year of a two-year, $14 million deal. There is a player option for 2022.
