Trevor May assures that low velocity fastball readings were changeups in return from IL

Trevor May tossed a scoreless inning in his return from the IL, giving the Mets another relief arm to help bolster a bullpen that wasn’t addressed as firmly as some fans would have liked to see at the trade deadline.

May, who has been out nearly three months, struck out one and allowed one hit, and touched 95 mph with his fastball. But the rest of the way, his heater was registering closer to 90 mph, though May assured everyone after the game that Statcast wasn’t registering the proper pitch, so there was no need for concern when it came to his velocity.

“They were changeups,” May said. “I just threw a lot more changeups than the data would say. It felt good. I got some good reactions…and I think guys are just gonna be waiting for the fastballs and I’m gonna pitch a little more and use my stuff. As we get in the swing of things here, the fastball is always gonna be a big part of what I do. But just decided to go with the hot hand today and what felt good. It’s kind of how it played out.”

Those following along without watching the game may have had some concern, but it was fairly clear that May was using a changeup grip in his final pitches of the night, and while that might not be his norm in terms of pitch usage, it was the plan of attack he chose on Wednesday, and it worked out.

But he did want to make sure nobody was worried about his health.

“I almost felt compelled to step off and say 'changeups,’” May laughed.
