Trevor Williams filled in for Chris Bassitt once again on Thursday, and all he did was give New York one of the best starts of his career.
Williams turned in seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts, no walks, and just two hits in a 10-0 victory over the Marlins, giving New York exactly what it needed before activating Bassitt from the COVID-19 IL on Friday.
Bassitt’s return coupled with Max Scherzer’s arrival and Jacob deGrom’s pending return likely means Williams’ role will be tweaked again, but as long as he is with the team, he will do whatever is asked.
“I'm proud to be a New York Met in any capacity,” Williams said. “When I get the ball, it's the most important thing for me. Whether that's starting, relieving, or anywhere in between, I'm proud that I'm able to contribute for the guys in this clubhouse and for the fans.”
