James McCann's disappointing two-year run with the Mets has come to a close.

The Mets have sent the veteran catcher and cash considerations to the Orioles in exchange for a player to be named.

The move comes about a week after the Mets signed free-agent backstop Omar Narvaez, signaling that McCann's time in New York was likely coming to a close.

The Mets signed the 32-year-old McCann to a four-year, $40 million deal two offseasons ago, coming off a pair of strong offensive campaigns with the Chicago White Sox, including an All-Star selection in 2019.

He was unable recapture that form in Queens, however, struggling through injury and ineffectiveness. In 603 plate appearances in his two seasons with the Mets, McCann hit a paltry .220/.282./.328 with 13 home runs. Last season, he was limited to just 61 games by a hand fracture that required surgery and an oblique strain.

With McCann out of the picture, the Mets figure to turn to Narvaez, Tomas Nido, and, at some point, top prospect Francisco Alvarez, who made his Major League debut late last season at age 20.

In Baltimore, McCann figures to serve as the primary backup to reigning AL Rookie of the Year runner-up Adley Rutschman.
