C-Mac: Mets will likely settle for stopgaps if they can't land Yoshinobu Yamamoto

The Mets seem to be making an all-in push for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, having met with the Japanese star twice this month, including once in Japan when Steve Cohen flew out to have dinner with the most prized starting pitcher on the free agent market.

Of course, they aren't the only suitor aggressively pursuing Yamamoto, so Cohen and company could still fall short. Where would the Mets go if they don't land Yamamoto? He doesn't see any other big moves to make up for the loss.

"I don't think there is going to be a big pivot like signing Jordan Montgomery or Blake Snell, or trade for Dylan Cease or [Shane] Bieber in Cleveland," C-Mac said. "I don't think that's the move. I think the Mets might just stand pat and sign more of these inning eaters, and just make it through the year before next year's pitching market becomes a lot more abundant."

So, if the Mets don't land Yamamoto, C-Mac says 2024 could be a long season in Queens, with a more all-in push coming next winter.

"For me, this is a must win for the Mets, because they don't have a Plan B," C-Mac said. "I see the Mets as 'This is our guy, and if we don't get him, we'll wait for next year when Bieber and all these other guys hit the market."
