Miguel Castro's COVID-19 test comes back negative, quickly reinstated

The Mets, as of Monday night, were still waiting on the results of reliever Miguel Castro's COVID-19 test, but the righty's symptoms alone were enough to prompt the team to place him on the COVID IL before Monday's game in Miami.

"He woke up with symptoms [Monday] and he did the right thing," manager Luis Rojas said after New York's 6-3 loss to the Marlins. "He let the trainer know and everyone else did the right thing as well, just following the protocols."

Those test results came back Tuesday afternoon, and with Castro testing negative, he was reinstated after just one day on the COVID IL. Geoff Hartlieb was optioned to make room.

No Mets have tested positive of yet, but as of last month, the team had still not reached the 85 percent vaccination threshold that would allow for alleviated protocols and restrictions. Castro quarantined while awaiting his test results.

Albert Almora Jr. was brought up to replace Castro in his brief absence. Castro had allowed just two runs over his last 10.1 innings, a span of nine appearances. He was one of multiple Mets, including Rojas himself, to get vaccinated publicly back in April after the team's home opener.
