Tylor Megill has opened the 2022 season throwing some HEAT.
The Mets sophomore, taking the Opening Day role after Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer couldn't go due to injury, came out firing against the Nationals on Thursday night, hitting 99 mph on the radar gun twice in the first inning against Washington's Cesar Hernandez, one of them to strike Hernandez out looking.
Those following along on MLB Twitter were pretty impressed with Megill's newfound gas. He had 11 pitches over 97 mph by the end of the second inning, quite the bump after he averaged 94.6 mph on his heater during his rookie season in 2021. Through two innings of work, he already threw six pitches that eclipsed the hardest pitch of his career previously.
It could have been adrenaline in a season opener, or a fresh arm early in the season, but if Megill can continue to produce that kind of consistent velocity, he can be in for a big improvement in his second big-league season.
