The Mets bullpen gave up three runs in 2 1/3 innings Wednesday night in a 7-5 loss to the Nationals, further exacerbating what many on WFAN have been saying for a while: they have SERIOUS bullpen issues, and need to address them if they’re serious about trying for a Wild Card spot.
Here’s the thing, though: who doesn’t have bullpen problems, and how much is out there?
“The problem again, and again and again and again and again, is how many teams are gonna be willing to sell bullpen help?” Shaun Morash said.
“You’re gonna overpay and you're gonna have to, but let me ask you this, don't you think Cohen and the Mets will?” Moose responded.
Shaun thinks they will, but they could still be outbid, too.
“Every team alive right now, it feels like the biggest issue they are gonna have, and the Yankees are included in this list, is bullpen help,” Shaun said. “There’s only so many arms that these teams have.”
“But then it comes down to the aggressiveness,” Moose replied, “and the Mets have been rolling out guys that are noncompetitive. You can find better arms than what the Mets have been rolling out, and you don’t need to have Mariano Rivera or John Wetteland. Some of the guys the Mets have been rolling out there, I mean, you're surprised they're major leaguers.”
Shaun joked that “Graeme Lloyd would close for the Mets right now’ and ‘their bullpen is a lot like the Giants’ offensive line,’ and Loogy had had enough of the Yankees fans.
“They're gonna get Edwin Diaz back, they're gonna get Sean Reid-Foley back after the All-Star break, and they're gonna see Nunez keep ascending here and I think he'll end up being the eighth inning guy,” Loogy said. “The Yankees are 3-7 in their last 10, and you glossed over a certain team…the Astros are coming, Shaun, and call me when you beat them in October.”
Moose called it ‘checkmate,’ and, well, that’s where the discussion turned to the Yankees, but yeah, the Mets’ bullpen is still a mess, after blowing their third lead of 5+ runs and eighth of 3+ runs this season.
