Two more Washington Nationals have tested positive for COVID-19, with a third player suspected to also be positive after an inconclusive test, putting this entire weekend's series with the Mets in jeopardy.
The two teams' season opener on Thursday was postponed earlier in the day, after one Nationals player was confirmed to be positive for COVID-19. MLB announced that "out of an abundance of caution," the two teams would not use Friday's built-in off day to make up the opener, but now, the entire weekend may be in jeopardy.
The Mets worked out at Nationals Park on Thursday, but the Nationals are mostly locked down, according to GM Mike Rizzo.
"For the most part, the whole team has been in lockdown and they're self-quarantining," Rizzo said. "We're not sure if we'll be able to (play this weekend).
The GM further said that one of the players who tested positive had a fever, but all of the others were asymptomatic, and contact tracing continues.
"The contact tracing has begun for the additional players beyond the one we had yesterday," Rizzo said. "They were all identified and we're working diligently to get all of those players in quarantine."
Rizzo also said it's unclear how the initial player who tested positive contracted the virus, but he "has the utmost confidence that it was not a player breaking protocol."
