The New York Giants have opened up another $1.6 million in cap space, restructuring wide receiver Darius Slayton’s deal for 2022.
Slayton was scheduled to make $2.54 million this year, but his salary now drops to the league minimum of $965,000, per Newsday’s Tom Rock, although there are playing time incentives that can earn some of that money back.
The news comes a day after Slayton was excused from Giants practice on Tuesday, a move that led many to wonder if the receiver would be cut, similar to how linebacker Blake Martinez was excused and then released a day later last week.
Instead, the Giants decided to keep Slayton, albeit at a lower salary.
Slayton, 24, had a breakout rookie year in 2019, with 48 catches for 740 yards and eight touchdowns in 14 games. However. He didn’t really take much of a step forward in 2020, though, posting a 50-751-4 line in 16 games as a starter, and last year he appeared in just 13 games around leg injuries and posted a 26-339-2 line for the disappointing Giants offense.
The Giants had reportedly received trade inquiries about Slayton this preseason, but he will open Week 1 as a reserve on the depth chart, assuming Kenny Golladay, Kadarius Toney, and Wan’Dale Robinson – the nominal starting trio – are all healthy and ready to go.
Slayton, Sterling Shepard, David Sills V and Richie James are the other receivers on the roster, although Shepard is working his way back from a torn Achilles last December.
