Breaking: Noah Syndergaard shut down six weeks with elbow inflammation

The Mets, seemingly dealing with brutal injury news on a daily basis, received more bad news on Thursday.

According to reports, Noah Syndergaard will be shut down for six weeks with right elbow inflammation, sidelining him until at least August in a major setback to his recovery from Tommy John surgery. The righty was initially expected back in June before he was pulled from his second rehab start in Low-A St. Lucie.

Syndergaard lasted just one inning in his most recent rehab start before being taken out with elbow soreness, though Mets manager Luis Rojas told reporters after the game that it was more of a preventative measure, and the discomfort for Syndergaard wasn't "overly concerning" for the medical staff.

Syndergaard doesn't have any structural damage in his elbow or his UCL, which was surgically repaired 14 months ago, but with this latest setback, his contributions to the 2021 team will likely be in question given how late into the season he is likely to return, assuming there are no more setbacks.

New York is still waiting on other rotation help as well, but Carlos Carrasco isn't expected back in the short term as he continues to deal with a hamstring injury that has prevented him from throwing a pitch all season.
