Pete Alonso is trying to channel some Citi Field home runs with some flashy new footwear.
When the slugging first baseman took the field for the Mets home opener on Thursday afternoon, he was sporting a pair of custom cleats which paid homage to the home run apple out in center field. The red cleats with green laces came equipped with red Velcro straps at the top, which read "HOME" and "RUN" on each strap.
The apple prop has sit out in center field since Citi Field was built, and the original was a fixture at Shea Stadium from 1980 until it was knocked down. The apple was said to be retired in 2007, but after a fan petition that garnered tremendous support, a new apple was brought to the team's new ballpark, and the original was placed outside Citi Field.
Alonso already has a home run this season, going deep in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. He drew a walk in his first home at-bat of the season.
