Pete Alonso is on fire, homering for the third straight game on Wednesday night to lead the Mets to a series win over the contending Cubs.

For Alonso, Wednesday’s home run was his 35th of the season, helping him become the first player in franchise history to post four seasons with 35 home runs or more, a feat he accomplished in just his fifth season, and fourth full season (the 2020 campaign was limited to 60 games due to the COVID pandemic).

“That’s really cool, I didn’t know that,” Alonso told MLB Network’s Jon Morosi after the game. “But I just go out there and try to do the best I can to help the team win. Whatever the results may be, that’s awesome. So I had no idea. That’s cool.”

Alonso has established himself as one of the best home run hitters in the game, and even with a prolonged midseason struggle after being hit on the wrist against the Braves, he is still within striking distance of reaching 50 home runs this year.
