Pete Alonso has made the Mets' Opening Day roster, according to multiple reports.

The Mets faced a tough decision regarding the highly touted, 24-year-old first baseman. They could have sent Alonso down to the minors for a few weeks to give the organization another year of team control. But the Mets have apparently decided against doing that.

Alonso, who has yet to play in the majors, did his part in spring training by hitting .352 with four home runs and 11 RBIs. He also had a .387 on-base percentage and 1.006 OPS.

"I think in Pete's case specifically, if he can run the gauntlet and go six straight years without any interrupted service or any hiccups in his career – then Mets fans should be pretty excited about what those next six years look like," general manager Brodie Van Wagenen said during Wednesday's appearance on CMB. "If we can't build a winner in that timeline, then shame on us."

Alonso was a second-round draft pick by the Mets in 2016. Splitting time between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Las Vegas last season, he hit .285 with 36 homers and 119 RBIs.

When asked Monday about the possibility of making the big-league roster, Alonso said, according to the New York Post: "I might cry if they give me the thumbs-up because it's a lifelong dream. This is my livelihood, my life's work, and to get the thumbs-up, you're a big leaguer, that's surreal."

According to The New York Post's Mike Puma, Alonso will be in the starting lineup Thursday at Washington. Alonso and Dominic Smith have been competing for playing time at first base. Smith enjoyed a strong spring, batting .321 with with two homers and 12 RBIs.

Pete Alonso will be in the starting lineup tomorrow, I was told.
