Pete Alonso watched many of his teammates receive big contracts, like Edwin Diaz, Brandon Nimmo, and Jeff McNeil, who received an extension before arriving at camp.
Many consider Alonso to be the next prime candidate for a big Mets extension, but he didn't have any interest talking about that after arriving at spring training on Wednesday.
"I'm super happy for Jeff. He's a great player, and he deserves his contract," Alonso said. "But personally, I don't feel comfortable talking about any contractual stuff. Any question in that regard, you can always ask my agent."
Alonso is eligible to become a free agent in 2025, though the team could buy out his final year of arbitration if there were to be an extension signed this season. But Alonso, a two-time All-Star and the Mets' top power bat, is keeping his focus on the upcoming season, even as questions linger regarding his future with the franchise.
"There's a lot of speculation, but for me, I'm just happy to be here," Alonso said. "I'm really happy to be a Met. I'm really looking forward to this year. I just want to come here and work hard and focus on the 2023 season at hand. This is a really special group of guys. I love this team, I love representing the city of New York, I love representing the New York Mets. It's a great place to play.
"For me, I'm just really happy with where I'm at. Regarding the future, I don't know what it holds. For me, I'm a New York Met in 2023, and I'm really happy and stoked to be here. We have a hell of a team, and it's gonna be a really exciting season."
