Pete Alonso on Mets' six-run rally in seventh inning of Game 1: 'That was fun'

Pete Alonso was 0-for-3 when he led off the seventh inning of Game 1 of Sunday's Yankees-Mets doubleheader…but he took Aroldis Chapman deep, clobbering a hanging slider over the wall to make it 5-5, and kicking off a rally where he made the final out of the game for the Mets in an eventual 10-5 win.

Alonso's reaction after the big hit and the win?

"That was fun! Let's do it again, maybe in like an hour?" he smiled.

The timing was right, as Game 1 of the doubleheader ended roughly 90 minutes before Game 2 was set to start, giving the teams more of a straight twinbill than a split one.

Still, not much time to dwell, but Alonso was asked if his, and the team's heroics, meant anything more because it was a Subway Series game, a question he answered with a non-committal answer.

"It's a big moment regardless, a comeback win against a quality team," he said. "Every game is a new opportunity for us, and no matter who the opponent is, this is the big leagues, and every single team we face is one of the best in the world."

Non-committal, that is, until his final sentence.

"But it is really cool, having it here in the cross-town rivalry."

Alonso started the rally and also ended it, striking out to end a six-run seventh, but he noted that the energy throughout that half-inning was "incredible" for the Mets.

"The energy as everything unfolded was so fun; like we do every day, every single one of us committed to being resilient, and being tough outs in the box," Alonso said. "The amount of momentum and energy we had was incredible, and once it started, it couldn't be stopped. That's what we want to keep continuing – we want to be relentless and come up big, especially late in games. That was clutch by everyone who stepped up to the dish."

Alonso was in the Game 2 lineup in the same spot, hitting fourth and playing first base against Yankees starter Nestor Cortes Jr.
