The Mets watched the Braves move to within 3.5 games of the division lead after taking three of four in Atlanta this week, and Gio is worried that more ground could be made up this weekend given who is on the mound for New York when they face the Phillies.
“I’m just a little bit nervous about going into Philadelphia with basically the underbelly of your starting rotation,” Gio said, noting that David Peterson and Trevor Williams are slated to start Saturday’s doubleheader.
Taijuan Walker seems to have avoided an IL stint and hopes to start Sunday despite leaving his last start after two innings with back spasms, but even still, Gio is worried about the pitching matchups, and knows the offense, particularly Pete Alonso, needs to heat back up to help get a series win and maintain their lead in the division.
“Even if he does pitch, what are we getting from him?” Gio said of Walker. “It’s a little bit of anxiety going into that series.
“They need to hit. This is a series where the offense has to carry them.”
