"There's nothing to see here..."
That's the message Rangers general manager Chris Young delivered after he informed the media on Wednesday that Jacob deGrom would be held out of the first workout this spring after the right-hander felt some "tightness" in his left side following his bullpen session a few days ago.
Young said deGrom wanted to participate in the workout and would have been permitted to if it were the regular season, but because of the cold temperatures and some wet field conditions, the club opted to play it safe and hold him out for a day or two.
“It’s as much about Day One of spring training as anything,” Young said Wednesday morning, via Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News. “We’re more about planning for March 30. It’s cold and wet and we’re going to have to alter some of what we do anyway. He’s six bullpens in. He’s competitive and wants to be out there. This probably says more about me than it does him.”
According to Grant, Young indicated that deGrom will likely partake in workouts later this week. A quick google search shows temperatures hovered around the mid-to-upper 30s on Wednesday morning. Surprise also had a rain storm pass through on Tuesday night.
The Rangers signed deGrom to a five-year, $185 million contract in the offseason despite the two-time Cy Young winner making only 26 starts since 2021 due to various injuries.
