A bombshell cross-borough move that isn’t Juan Soto announced Friday night: per Joel Sherman of the New York Post, the New York Mets have agreed to a three-year, $38 million deal with the Mets…and will become a starting pitcher.
Holmes, 31, has been the Yankees’ closer for the majority of the last three seasons, but has been removed from the role in-season in each of the last two years. Last season, he had a 3.14 ERA in 63 innings, with 30 saves in 43 chances and 68 strikeouts.
For his career, Holmes has a 3.71 ERA and 74 saves in 311 games, with just four starts to his name – all of them in 2018 with Pittsburgh.
According to Jeff Passan, the Mets deal includes an opt-out after the second year, and if Holmes does not continue as a starter, the backup plan is to be a setup man for closer Edwin Diaz.
