Sal couldn't believe any Mets fans would blame Steve Cohen for the team's current standing in the playoff race, and on Wednesday, he was backing the general manager.
Callers were critical of Billy Eppler, along with Cohen as well, leading Sal on another rant that fans could really have such a problem with a front office that had just put together a 101-win season while still being very early in their regime.
"You're calling Billy Eppler a bad GM after one year, where he had 101 wins! Sal said. "Name me the Mets general manager that has won a ring since 1986, or the Mets owner. All you care about is the ring. You're an idiot! How do you think you get the ring? There's a build-up process to it.
"I'm not saying Billy Eppler is a great general manager. I'm saying that we don't know yet. What we have to go based off of, is one very successful season. That's a fact. It's the second-most successful regular season in the history of the franchise. You can't take that away from him. It happened.
"Every general manager, even the most successful general managers, have made crappy decisions and bad trades. There wasn't that piece out there that they missed last year."
If Mets fans are looking for front office members to blame, how about looking at the previous regime that left the team in the spot they were in when Cohen took over?
"The Mets are in a bad predicament because of prior ownership and prior general manager, that they have to rebuild the farm system," Sal said. "It doesn't allow you to go trade those guys for available players at the trade deadline or in the offseason."
Sal isn't declaring that Eppler is a great GM, rather that it's far too early to declare otherwise, especially after a 101-win season just a year ago.
