Sal says criticism of 'Mets best player' Francisco Lindor has gotten out of hand

Francisco Lindor is once again off to a brutal start at the plate this season, and the Mets entering Thursday's doubleheader with an 0-4 record doesn't help.

But Sal says the venom from many pockets of the fanbase towards Lindor is unwarranted, as the shortstop deserves more appreciation for what the brings on a nightly basis.

"Francisco Lindor is underrated," Sal said. "He needs to be better from start to finish in the season…but he is their best player. Yet fans love Jeff McNeil, love Brandon Nimmo, love Pete Alonso. Lindor is better than all of them. I think the criticism of Lindor is doing more harm than good. It's been like that since day one.

"I said I don't think Lindor is having fun, and I think that's in part because fans get on him and people are criticizing him. It's gotta stop with Lindor. The Mets have a lot of problems. Lindor to me would be the least of them."

Lindor has said in the past that the negative reaction from fans weighed on him in his first season in Queens, and Sal doesn't believe the star shortstop has gotten fair treatment since. While fans seem to give their homegrown players a pass, they don't do the same for Lindor.

"He is a great baseball player," Lindor said. "Plays every single day, puts the bat on the ball, plays great defense…he's the New York Mets' best player. Slow starts aside, let's get off of Francisco Lindor's back."
