Sal: David Robertson trade 'just the beginning' for Mets, not high on team's 2024 chances

Sal Licata had to come to terms with the fact that his Mets, despite coming into the season with the highest payroll in baseball history, had become deadline sellers.

With David Robertson being moved on Thursday night, the writing was on the wall that more moves would be on the way, and the front office was waving the white flag on the season.

“This is just the beginning,” Sal said. “Once you trade Robertson, now what’s the point? Trade [Jose] Quintana, trade either [Justin] Verlander or [Max] Scherzer…this is just the beginning of a fire sale, and I hate the fact that they have to do that.”

Despite the reality of the sell-off, Sal says there is one big reason to still have hope for the future of the Mets, though he doesn’t seem to have much hope for the near future.

“I’d rather have Steve Cohen than any other owner in sports,” Sal said. “However, this season is as big of a disaster and disappointment that you can possibly have…and I’m not even sold that they’re gonna be good next year.

“How are the Mets gonna be good next year if they’re trading their best asset for 13-year-olds?”
