Sal: If Mets fans aren't celebrating 'historic' Juan Soto press conference, 'you're doing it wrong'
Juan Soto is set to be officially introduced as a Met on Thursday afternoon, and Sal Licata says it represents one of the great days in Mets history.
For Sal, Thursday represents an opportunity to celebrate what the team accomplished, and how different it is from much of their history.
There will be a time to talk expectations and how there will come a time where Soto needs to prove his worth by finally bringing a title back to Queens, but Thursday is not that day.
"Let's also just be fans for a second and enjoy what today is," Sal said. "If you're a Mets fan and have dealt with this for your entire existence - being second citizen - but think about where the Mets were from 2009 on. They didn't sign any free agent ever!
"Today is a day where they are getting the biggest guy, and from the Yankees to boot. This is a day to celebrate. Yes, we acknowledge that they have to win and have sustained success, and win at least one World Series."
BT agrees that it is a monumental day in the history of not just the Mets, but New York sports, as its not often that a young player of this caliber is brought in via free agency.
"When you think of most of the sporting titans in our city, a lot of them were drafted," BT said. "You think of Tom Seaver, Patrick Ewing, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter.
"That snapshot, that picture represents so much in New York City lore."
The cameras will indeed be snapping as Soto puts on a Mets jersey for the first time, and Sal says Mets fans should be feeling nothing but excitement and optimism when it happens, not already looking ahead to what the team needs to do to make sure the contract was worthwhile.
"If you're not enjoying this day, even just a press conference, then you're doing it wrong as a fan," Sal said. "Today is a special day - a historic day - in the Mets history."
