Sal tried to reverse jinx the Mets by declaring the Braves division champions before this week’s critical series began, but after two straight losses via two straight blown leads, it clearly didn’t work.
So, after Wednesday night’s defeat, the fifth straight loss for New York, Sal was ready to make another declaration.
“The Mets’ season is over,” Sal said. “Forget the NL East. This season is over, because they’re not any good. This Mets team? They’re dead. Not the division, the season, is over.
“You think this crappy team that we just watched lose five in a row, that is under .500 again, that just got embarrassed by the Braves, again, you think they can go on a run? Come on now.”
That “crappy” team, Sal says, will not be able to make enough changes to change that fate, mainly because the team doesn’t seem motivated to do that, starting with the Mets’ commitment to Adam Ottavino, who came up short in a big spot again on Wednesday.
“He sucks. He’s terrible,” Sal said. “He was horrible before he got here, he was good last year, which was an aberration, and he sucks again this year. He can’t pitch to lefties. It’s so obvious, but yet, not to them. Daniel Vogelbach can’t play baseball. It’s so obvious, but yet, not to them. Francisco Alvarez should be in the lineup every single day. It’s so obvious, but yet, not to them.
“So, how do you fix it? The answer is, you don’t. Because they built a team with the highest payroll in history, and it’s not good enough.”
Sal doesn’t want to hear about the 2022 Phillies as a reason for holding out hope that the season isn’t over. The Mets have shown you all you need to see to know the season is officially a waste.
“I don’t care if they win [Thursday]…you already showed the difference between you and the Braves,” Sal said. “And this narrative of ‘You just have to make the playoffs and anything can happen nowadays. Look at the Phillies last year.’ Bullcrap! You don’t have the highest payroll in Major League Baseball to just hope to get in the postseason. No, I know a bad baseball team when I see one.”
