As the Mets turn to a must-win game three, they will be looking for a hero to help propel them to the NLDS for the first time since 2015.
Sal Licata is done believing that Pete Alonso is going eventually, finally, be that hero.
“I’ve had enough of Pete Alonso,” Sal said. “It’s nothing personal, he seems like a great guy, but my God, it’s October! There’s one game left on the schedule, and this guy hasn’t been able to buy a big hit!
“Stop me if you heard this before. Pete Alonso came up in a big spot with a chance to change the entire game with one swing, and he failed.
This time, he failed by tripping over his own bat running to first base. Enough!”
Alonso went 1-for-4 with a strikeout in game two, his lone hit coming with two outs and nobody in the seventh, just before the Brewers made their improbable comeback to even the series. It has been a mediocre season since Opening Day, and Sal doesn’t see how Alonso is just going to turn it on now after failing to come up in several big spots throughout the year.
“I can’t even watch Pete Alonso anymore,” Sal said. “And of course he gets a base hit with two outs and nobody on in the seventh inning. I just can’t take it. You hope he’s gonna get it done, we’ve been waiting for it all year long, but Pete Alonso is killing this team.
“He has folded in his biggest season to date. Not only for himself, playing for a contract, but what the Mets have done as a team.”
Sal would take Alonso out of the lineup if the Mets had some better alternatives, but at the very least, he should be dropped in the lineup in a winner-take-all game three.
“I would drop him out! But there’s no other option,” Sal said. “He never does anything! He can’t even give you a good at-bat. It’s infuriating.”
