Sal: Good idea for shorthanded Mets to back Matt Harvey?

A caller wanted to get Sal’s thoughts on the Mets potentially taking a flyer on Matt Harvey now that Carlos Carrasco has become the latest New York starter to go down with an injury.

While Sal loves the idea of Harvey pitching at Citi Field again, he doesn’t think the Mets should be anywhere near that point of desperation just yet.

“I’d be all for it,” Sal said. “I don’t know where Matt Harvey is mentally at this point in his career…I would be OK with it for nostalgic purposes, but I don’t think it’s the best move.

“The Mets have the highest payroll in baseball this year. You shouldn’t have to rely on signing Matt Harvey off the scrap heap when he’s clearly not that good anymore. That’s the problem.”

Harvey didn’t pitch last season, and posted a lousy 6.37 ERA in 2021 with the Orioles, but has made it clear that he believes he can still get outs in the big leagues. But Sal sees other internal options that would be better than seeing if Harvey is able to recapture his old magic from his time in New York.

“For nostalgic purposes, absolutely, but you’d rather go out there for quality purposes, that the team is good and is gonna win,” Sal said.

“They signed Dylan Bundy, he’s still there. They have Joey Lucchesi, who can come up. As much as I would like to see it, they are ways away from having to go to Matt Harvey.”
