Jeremy Hefner spoke to reporters in a rare interview after Wednesday's loss, and Sal Licata didn't hear anything too inspiring after the Mets dropped a series to the Astros.
"He didn't have any answers," Sal said. "He's gotta have answers. He alluded to the pitch clock potentially being a problem, and then he quickly said he didn't want to make excuses. Well, good, because you shouldn't be making excuses. Everyone else in baseball is doing just fine with the pitch clock."
For Sal, as the Mets hold the fifth-worst ERA as a starting rotation in all of baseball, it's time to put Hefner under the microscope.
"At least when Mickey Callaway was here, and he was an awful manager, but he did get improvements out of certain pitchers on the staff. Who has Jeremy Hefner made better? Where is the one guy you look at and say, 'Hefner has made that guy good'?
"Drew Smith is a great example. Why isn't he holding him accountable when Drew Smith throws the off-speed stuff. What's Hefner doing, aside from applying the analytics?"
