The Mets were dealt another blow on Thursday, with Max Scherzer agreeing to a 10-game suspension while fellow starters Justin Verlander, Carlos Carrasco, and Jose Quintana all remain on the IL.
Yet still, New York won again on Thursday, and have lost just once on their current west coast trip, and Sal believes that the Mets are showing what they're capable of by continuing to string together wins despite all the adversity that continues to flare up around them.
"It's the Buck effect," Sal said. "They're 13-7. [Pete] Alonso is playing like an MVP, [Brandon] Nimmo like an All-Star. Heck, maybe he's even playing like an MVP.
"Think about how good this team could be if they really got going."
Noting that the team is without nearly its entire Opening Day rotation, while they haven't gotten much production from the DH spot or third base yet, and Francisco Lindor hasn't hit his stride yet, Sal believes this Mets team, despite his preseason concerns could turn out to be a better team than last year's group.
"I was skeptical about how this team could be, was worried that they didn't have another power bat, and after getting swept in Milwaukee, I was really concerned," Sal said. "But since then, they haven't done anything but win.
"The Mets are good, and they're not going away. This trip proved to me that this is the same team as last year, if not a little bit better. They are not going away."
