Sal goes off on Max Scherzer for continuing to blow Mets leads

The Mets picked up their third straight win on Tuesday, but Sal's mood was spoiled by Max Scherzer coughing up another league before being bailed out by the long ball.

The aging ace allowed three home runs after New York took an early lead, but a long home run by Francisco Alvarez eventually helped the Mets to an encouraging win over the Diamondbacks.

Still, Sal did not like seeing Scherzer blow another lead.

"Who has blown more leads for the Mets this year, Scherzer, Ottavino, or Drew Smith?" Sal said. "That drives me up a wall.

"You can find a pitcher - you're not paying him to be a guy that's gonna go six innings, give up four or five runs, and blow leads - they can find guys to do that for $10 or $13 million a year, not $43 million a year. I'm tired of Max Scherzer going out there and blowing leads that this otherwise inept team gives him. The Mets aren't good enough to overcome that crap…he's done it multiple times already. It drives me nuts. He can't even give you a shutdown inning anymore! It drives me crazy!"

Sal also wasn't happy with Drew Smith, who gave up a pair of baserunners with the Mets holding a seemingly comfortable four-run lead in the ninth, forcing Buck Showalter to turn to David Robertson to avoid a potential collapse. For Sal, he hopes that's the last time he has to watch Smith pitch in a Mets uniform.

"Drew Smith, get him out of here!" Sal said. "He's not a major league pitcher! What more do you need to see?"
