The Mets may have lost their superstar closer for the season after Edwin Diaz hurt his knee during a celebration at the World Baseball Classic, and for Sal Licata, the devastating injury was another reason to rip the WBC and the injuries that seemingly always arise out of the event that doesn’t give back enough in return.
“If I’m Steve Cohen, I’m suing the PANTS off of Major League Baseball!” Sal said Thursday morning. “I’m suing everybody! [Rob] Manfred, baseball, I want my money back from Diaz, anybody else that joined him in the WBC.”
Diaz signed a $100 million deal this past offseason after his historic 2022 saw him receive Cy Young and MVP votes, but now, his follow-up season could be lost already. For Sal, that is way too steep a price to pay for an event that he believes not nearly enough people care about to warrant the risk.
“This is not reactionary. This is something I’ve been saying, and I know many have been saying for weeks, if not months,” Sal said. “You cannot have major league players, who are getting paid millions of dollars to do a job for a team, go participate in a meaningless exhibition tournament, the Worthless Baseball Classic. It cannot happen.
“Steve Cohen couldn’t give a crap less about the money. We don’t either.
We want out closer! A World Series or bust season and we lose our closer!”
