After the Mets dropped their series to the Astros on Wednesday, there were familiar refrains from coaches and players, as Buck Showalter and Daniel Vogelbach both said that a run of success is coming at some point this season.
Sal Licata wants to know what it's going to take for someone on the Mets to take some accountability during postgame interviews, rather than constantly expressing hope and optimism despite mounting losses.
"The number one thing that irks me about this Mets team, they all say the same thing after these games," Sal said. "How about somebody stand up there and say, 'This is unacceptable, we suck right now, we're better than this'?
"I want to hear that from somebody as opposed to 'We just need to put it together.' It's the same rhetoric after every one of these games. It's nauseating. 'It's frustrating, we need to be better, we're playing good teams.'"
Times have changed, and there isn't as much public accountability from players and coaches when in front of a camera or behind a microphone. But Sal says someone needs to step up and be a leader to try and wake up a team that isn't just losing, but is also lacking in fundamentals so far this season.
"Somebody get mad. Somebody get angry. Somebody take accountability," Sal said. "Do something! It's three months of this malaise with this team. Somebody admit, talk into the microphone, look into the camera and admit, 'The Braves stole the division from us last year, and we haven't recovered.'"
