Sal sounds off on Mets after latest frustrating loss: 'What is with them?!'

Sal Licata was not happy with his Mets after they were swept by the Tigers on Wednesday, highlighted by Brandon Nimmo getting gunned down trying to steal second base with New York down two runs in the ninth.

"Those damn Mets! What is with them?!" Sal said. "How do you get swept by the Tigers? Doing things they didn't do at all last season.

"Finally, they have a series where Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander both pitched…and those two, against one of the worst offenses in baseball, you would think that would be a golden combination…guess what? Scherzer was awful, and Verlander's performance through five innings didn't matter, because they can't hit."

The loss was the Mets' ninth in their last 11 games, and they continue to deal with injuries to the pitching staff while the offense continues to slump. Not much is going well, and Sal says nothing will get better until their key players that are getting paid the big bucks start to carry their weight.

"I can't trust them enough to sit here and say 'They'll be fine, they'll still make the playoffs,' because in franchise history, they have only made the playoffs in consecutive years twice," Sal said.

"They're not built well enough in that lineup to overcome [Francisco] Lindor having a slow start to the season. They're not built well enough to overcome [Starling] Marte not hitting. They're not built well enough to overcome [Brandon] Nimmo making bonehead plays."
