As the Yankees face an identity crisis and enter a homestand one game below .500, Sal believes a dark period is coming in the Bronx, and it will lead to the Bombers' crosstown rivals becoming kings of the city for the first time since their last championship.
"I think the Mets are about to take over this town," Sal said. "Right now it doesn't feel like it, but if you actually think about it and do your due diligence and use common sense, this town is ripe for the picking with the teams down right now…I believe in Steve Cohen and the direction of the organization. This is the time.
"Steve Cohen and his Mets will take over this town, starting with next season. That will be the beginning of what we once saw in the 80s."
The Mets don't look like a team poised to take over the biggest market in the sporting world from a team that has dominated the city for decades, but Sal believes Cohen's pockets will help accelerate the team's rebuild process, and the owner, seeing a chance to take control of the city, will make sure the Mets are competitive again next year, while still building for sustained success.
"They have a dangerous combination of riches, smarts, and balls," Sal said. "What they did at the deadline took balls…the smarts, the money, and the guys they have, I really believe the Mets are in much better shape than people are giving them credit for."
