Sal: Mets are way too 'over confident' in starting rotation

Sal wants to see the Mets make some bigger moves before Opening Day, including signing free agent Jordan Montgomery to solidify a rotation already hit with injuries to Kodai Senga.

It doesn't seem like the Mets will go that route, as David Stearns told reporters that there likely won't be an external addition to take Senga's place to begin the season. Sal says that is a symptom of the team thinking way too highly of its rotation despite a plethora of question marks.

"They are over-confident in their starting pitching," Sal said. "They're expecting - and maybe it's because Stearns is new here - they're expecting the best of every scenario.

"Luis Severino, they look at him as peak Severino. We look at him as 'things can go sideways real quick.' Sean Manaea, same thing. They look at him as the best of Sean Manaea. In reality, maybe he's not."

Severino is a former Cy Young candidate, while Jose Quintana is a former All-Star. Sal says the Mets are not being realistic enough when it comes to the risks and pitfalls that make up the current rotation, especially after the ace went down with an injury that will leave him on the IL to start the season.

"They're basing it on the info and data bullcrap that they have. It's bullcrap," Sal said. "You can't have that many question marks in a rotation."
