A caller told Sal Licata that the Mets should be happy with a 5-5 record on their upcoming west coast trip, and Sal had to stop him right there.
"Why would you be happy with that?" Sal said. "Isn't it time to raise expectations?"
The Mets came into the season with World Series expectations, and even with some damaging injuries still plaguing the team, Sal says it's about time this franchise and its fanbase starts reaching a little higher.
"If the Mets go 5-5, you take it and move on, but the expectations for a team with the highest payroll in baseball, a team that came in with World Series aspirations, the expectations going in need to be a little higher than 5-5," Sal said. "I'm saying 7-3."
The Mets get started with the lowly A's, then take on the Dodgers and the Giants. Los Angeles is the only team of the three that likely has the playoffs in their future, so why not expect the Mets to come home with a winning record?
"I'm not buying that. You want to win the division or not? Playing .500 ball is not gonna get it done," Sal said. "Atlanta is off to a 9-4 start to the year. Going 5-5 is OK, but this is higher expectations here. Raise those expectations."
