As questions swirl about Buck Showalter's future with the Mets, as David Stearns arrives as the new president of baseball operations, Sal says it would be a big mistake to let the manager go.
In fact, Sal says there isn't a bigger asset in the coaching staff or front office than Showalter, who is signed through next season.
"I felt the need to come on here and support my guy Buck Showalter," Sal said. "There has been this feel that the Mets could make a change at the manager spot…I am here to tell you, if the Mets don't bring back Buck Showalter, they are making a huge mistake.
"You will do no better than Buck Showalter. This is not his fault. Has he been great this year? Absolutely not, everyone deserves blame from the top down. But Buck Showalter should be back with the Mets in 2024."
Showalter managed the Mets to a 101-win season in his first year, but the team took a major collective step back in 2023, as the highest payroll in baseball history became sellers at the trade deadline in one of the biggest disappointments the Mets have ever seen. With that in mind, BT is ready to move on.
"I didn't view Buck Showalter as an asset at all this season, quite frankly," BT said. "I thought the Mets fundamentals were atrocious…great baseball man, great person, but I think it's expired. His energy level, it was alarmingly low this year."
