Sal ready to move on from Pete Alonso, calls him out for not giving teammates All-Star love

Pete Alonso is going to the All-Star Game and will be a participant in the Home Run Derby, and as of Thursday morning, is the only Met selected to the Midsummer Classic.

Many argue that the Mets had other players more deserving of the honor, particularly Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo, but the league could have selected Alonso to get him in the Derby, which he's one twice already.

Sal says the way Alonso has handled the All-Star Game nod highlights his lack of leadership, and would have liked to hear the first baseman publicly campaign for Lindor or Nimmo to get the selection over him.

"You think Pete…he has been one of the least impactful players for this team's turnaround," Sal said. "You would think that Pete Alonso, after being wrongfully selected to the All-Star Game, while acknowledging that he was excited to go and participate, he could have very easily said - The way you would handle that as a leader and an All-Star and one of the faces of the franchise…is by saying 'It's a great honor to be selected. I don't think I'm having a great season. I wish I was having a better season, but I'll take it. Who should really be going is Francisco Lindor and Brandon Nimmo.' He didn't say that. To me, it just came across as selfish.

"I'm not trying to make a huge deal of this…but that's how I feel. If you were a leader and you were not selfish, you would handle this differently."

Sal says it was a "selfish" act by Alonso to not give public respect to his teammates, and furthers his belief that the Mets would be better off moving on, whether it be via trade this summer or letting him walk in free agency this winter.

"I think I'm just done with Pete Alonso at this point," Sal said. "I thought he was gonna have a big year, he didn't. I want to move on. The Mets need to trade Alonso. It's not just about that.

"That's not what you want from a supposed face of the franchise."
