The Mets added two outfielders in their free agent spending spree before the lockout, and whenever the roster freeze finally ends, the team could be looking to add yet another.
Manager Buck Showalter told reporters at New York's minor league camp on Friday that new general manager Billy Eppler and company could be looking to sign another free agent outfielder to add to their depth.
"I'll leave that with Billy, but it's something we've talked about," Showalter said. "We're on the same page with everything where that's concerned.
It's an area that we're examining, see if we're comfortable with it. We're always gonna look within first
"That's one of the many things that Billy's examining, and I believe he's gonna be on top of it."
New York signed Starling Marte and Mark Canha before the lockout, and are open to extending Brandon Nimmo, one of the team's best hitters last season. There are plenty of depth options still available when the lockout ends, including former Met Kevin Pillar, Kyle Schwarber, Tommy Pham, Andrew McCutchen, Eddie Rosario, and Jorge Soler.
Given how active the Mets have already been this offseason, it would be wrong to count them out on any potential signing at this point.
"Billy's got a lot of things on speed dial," Showalter said. "He's got so many balls in the air right now."
