Starling Marte has no regrets for rally-killing steal attempt: 'I always have the green light'

Starling Marte has been a spark for the Mets to begin his New York tenure, already with two home runs and three stolen bases, but on Wednesday, he suffocated a Mets rally right after igniting one.

With New York trailing 5-0 in the seventh inning, Marte blooped in a single to bring in New York's first run of the game, but with runners at the corners and the red-hot Francisco Lindor at the dish, Marte took off for second and was thrown out on the steal attempt, taking the bat out of Lindor's hands and ending the threat.

But Marte says he would do it again.

"I don't have any regret," Marte said through his interpreter. "Everyone knows the type of player that I am, that I'm gonna go in a situation like that. I wanted to get in a better position to score on a hit...unfortunately I was out on that play, but I'm not going to stop playing the way that I do because eventually, that will pay off for us."

Manager Buck Showalter wasn't in the dugout for the game, having undergone a medical procedure and hoping to be back from Thursday's series finale, but Jeremy Hefner, normally the pitching coach but part of a three-headed managerial tandem on Wednesday, deferred to hitting coach Eric Chavez or player development coordinator Dick Scott as to whether or not Marte had the clearance to try and swipe second in that situation.

But Marte is convinced even if Showalter was still calling the shots, and in any situation, he is cleared for takeoff.

"I always have the green light," Marte said. "I thought that was an opportunity to take the bag there. I wanted to be aggressive, so I went, but they called me out."
