Starling Marte dealing with oblique soreness, did not work out Monday

Thankfully, Pete Alonso is okay after a scary motor vehicle accident on Sunday, but the Mets do have their first injury issue of the spring.

According to manager Buck Showalter, outfielder Starling Marte is in camp, but did not take part in Monday's team workout due to a sore oblique that he's been feeling for at least a week.

"He talked to us about six days ago about feeling a little sore in the oblique area," Showalter said. "To be on the safe side, we took imaging and an X-ray just to make sure we knew what we were dealing with, that there wasn't something major. And that came back really good."

Marte, 33, inked a four-year deal prior to the lockout, and will be battling with Brandon Nimmo to see which one mans center field while the other works in a corner this season.

For now, it will be Nimmo getting any and all of the work out there as Marte heals, but the Mets are hopeful it won't be long before one of their new acquisitions hits the ground running.

"He was out there but not participating. We think he should be OK there," Showalter said. "But you know with that type of area, it always puts a flag up initially. So far, so good."
