Steve Cohen: Buck Showalter, Billy Eppler's jobs are 'absolutely' safe through end of season

No, Steve Cohen did not begin Wednesday's press conference by slamming the table and firing his manager and GM.

Instead, he gave 100 percent security for Buck Showalter and Billy Eppler through at least the end of this season.

"Absolutely," Cohen said when asked if he would be keeping Showalter and Eppler through the end of the year, regardless of how the Mets finish.

Judging by Cohen's comments, Showalter and Eppler will be sticking around after that as well, even if the Mets don't turn things around.

"I'm a patient guy," Cohen said. "Everybody wants a headline, fire this person or that person, but I don't see that as a way to operate. If you want to attract good people to this organization, the worst thing you can do is be impulsive and win the headline of the day. you're not gonna attract the best talent, because they're not gonna want to work for somebody who has a short fuse.

"I know the fans want something to happen, I get it, but sometimes you can't do it, because you have long-term objectives. That's the way it is."

While Cohen gave Eppler a vote of confidence, he is still determined to add a president of baseball operations to work with Eppler on roster construction, though he added that the titles are just that, and it doesn't mean Eppler would necessarily be knocked down a rung on the company ladder.

"I've been clear since day one that I still want a president of baseball ops," Cohen said. "Billy knows that…that's still out there. At some point, we will fill that position. My view is Billy be a part of that. At that point, I've enhanced the management team, and that's the goal."

Still, would a fourth-place finish with no playoff berth not at least raise the question as to whether Showalter and Eppler are the right people for the job, especially when provided the financial resources that Cohen has given?

"Fourth place is not the goal," Cohen said. "Any time you end up in fourth place, to sit and do nothing is probably not a great place to be. Getting into specifics, I don't know what the answers are. We'll figure out what went wrong and then figure out how to fix it."
