Steve Cohen: Mets expectations in 2024 will be 'a lot lower' than this season

Much intrigue around the Mets now goes beyond 2023, with many wondering what the team will look like in 2024.

Could a team that just sported the highest payroll in league history elect to turn the following year into a rebuild, despite having the richest owner in the sport?

According to that owner, it certainly seems like a possibility, depending on how the winter plays out.

"The expectations were really high this year, and my guess is next year will be a lot lower, but I can't speak to what's gonna happen in the offseason," Cohen said. "I'm opportunistic. I don't want to roll a team out there that we're gonna be embarrassed by.

"But we also know that spending a fortune…it doesn't guarantee you a trip to the playoffs. I think we need to look and see what we need. Obviously, we're going to need starting pitching. Other than that - relief, pitching, we have Edwin coming back, Brooks [Raley] is here, Otto is here - we've got our core, the Baby Mets will be a year older."

Mets brass reportedly told their soon-to-be-traded veterans before the deadline that they were aiming for 2025, or more likely 2026, to be their estimated point of contention, but Cohen doesn't want to give up on next season already, even if the eye is on the future.

"I'm not as negative," Cohen said. "It won't be as star-studded a team as it was, but stars don't necessarily make for wins. But I think we're gonna be highly competitive."
