As the Dodgers make their push for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the path for the Mets to land the star free agent seems to get more daunting.
Steve Cohen and company now seem to be going up against a team Yamamoto grew up rooting for, which is armed with Shohei Ohtani and loads of money, as well as a Yankee squad that has scouted the righty all year.
What does it mean if the Mets miss out on Yamamoto? C-Mac believes it could mean a lot, at least in terms of the power many believed Cohen would have when he took over as owner.
"These guys have other checklists than just the last dollar," C-Mac said of the top free agents. "If that's the case, does Steve Cohen have the advantage we all think he has? Does Steve Cohen have this superpower to get whoever he wants whenever he wants? Clearly not if he misses out on Yamamoto, because they have been clear from day one that this is their one big target this offseason."
Many believed Cohen's endless funds would result in the Mets grabbing all the best stars, which it seemed like at one point last winter when New York nabbed Justin Verlander and Carlos Correa, before medical concerns caused the Correa deal to fall through. But if the Mets strike out on their top target, C-Mac wonders if the anticipated power of Cohen was misjudged.
"If they lose him to the Yankees just based on relevancy and being the Yankees, or to the Dodgers because he wanted to play in a different location with his friends and for a team he grew up rooting for…if that's the case, Steve Cohen isn't the superpower or big advantage we all thought he was," C-Mac said."
