Steve Cohen on Mets' offseason plans: 'It's probably going to require spending'

The Mets finally have a new general manager in place, and once he's ready to start making moves to try and improve the roster, Steve Cohen says he will have the resources to make big splashes.

The owner discussed the spending plan for this offseason, and Cohen admitted that improvements likely aren't coming from within, meaning it's time to break out the checkbook.

"If we're gonna find the right type of talent, it's probably gonna be either by trades with other clubs or free agents," Cohen said at Eppler's introductory press conference on Friday. "We don't really have a lot in our farm system to supplement what we need. It's probably going to require spending. That's what's gonna happen. "

Cohen has already showed a willingness to spend, signing Francisco Lindor to a record $341 million extension just before the 2021 season. Now, the team needs upgrades both on the mound and at the plate, and Cohen says that his new general manager will have what he needs to field an improved team in 2022.

"I've let Billy know, I'm willing, for the right deals and right free agents, to go get the players we need," Cohen said.

The Mets looked poised to make the playoffs last season, holding onto first place for three months before flopping in the second half of the season. The fanbase will be demanding to see big changes after another sub-.500 finish, and with improvements likely only coming externally, Eppler will likely be busy in his early days in his new role.

An important question to begin Eppler's tenure will be how much financial flexibility he will have from the front office. Cohen is making it seem like there will be plenty if necessary.

"We want to be competitive," Cohen said. "We want to win our division and be in the playoffs and get deep into the playoffs. we've got to field a team that has the ability to do that. I've let Billy and Sandy know: It's whatever they need. I'm open to their suggestions and recommendations, and the goal is to put a very competitive team on the field."
