Steve Cohen on Pete Alonso's future with Mets: 'We hope we work things out'

With the Mets in a period of transition, the future of Pete Alonso doesn't seem as concrete as it may have at the start of the season.

Despite not having an extension before the year began, many assumed Alonso, the team's homegrown superstar, would be taken care of after Steve Cohen went on a historic spending spree to bring in high-priced free agents and lock up other homegrown talents like Brandon Nimmo. But now, after a fire sale at the trade deadline and an eye on the future, could Alonso be on his way out after next season, when he becomes a free agent for the first time?

"We love Pete as a Met," Cohen said. "He's an integral part of the Mets. He's still with us for another year. We hope we work things out.

"Even with Brandon [Nimmo], we worked things out in free agency. Hopefully we'll get a few shots at the apple and try to figure it out."

Asked if he had already had extension conversations with Alonso, Cohen wouldn't reveal yes or no, so the future of Alonso in Queens will continue to be uncertain until he is either signed to an extension, signed as a free agent after next season, or traded.

"I don't want to talk about private conversations," Cohen said. "But I will say Pete is a great player."
