Tierney wanted to see more fight from Mets when benches cleared: 'Throw your weight around. Help your boy out'

Pete Alonso had some strong words after Wednesday's benches-clearing altercation with the Cardinals, implying he could "easily" put someone in the hospital if he wanted to.

Alonso, who had been tackled from behind by St. Louis first base coach Stubby Clapp during the scrum, was hit by a pitch in the head the night before, and J.D. Davis was plunked in the ankle before New York retaliated, but nothing else escalated after the benches emptied.

Brandon Tierney admittedly wanted to see some more fight from the Mets, and less chatter about it after the fact.

"I would have liked to have seen the Mets be more aggressive in the scrum," Tierney said during Thursday's show. "I'm not advocating taking somebody out or a blind side shot, but when your boy Alonso, who has been drilled a couple times here, is on the floor…come on, throw your weight around. Help your boy out."

Of course, that would have meant suspensions and potential injuries to a team that is in first place, but the Mets are by far the most hit team this season, with 19 to date, including two to the head area on Alonso alone. But given the mounting frustration for the Mets with how often they've been hit, Tierney felt Wednesday's skirmish was a missed opportunity to make more of a statement, though he understands the times have changed.

"These aren't the '86 Mets, and I don't mean in terms of talent, and I'm not saying they can't replicate a championship…but Darryl [Strawberry] is not coming out swinging, Lenny [Dykstra], [Wally] Backman, [Keith] Hernandez, Ray Knight was an absolute beast," Tierney said. "These guys loved to fight. They took on the entire Houston police department at a bar!

"It's a totally different generation. These guys are wired different. I'm kind of in the middle here, because when Alonso said what he said postgame…I believe that, but you were also on your back. I know you were taken down from behind, which is a clown move…definitely not about promoting violence, but if I'm another Met and I see Alonso get taken down on from behind, isn't that license to throw a haymaker? Probably."
