As the Mets declare themselves deadline sellers with the trade of David Robertson on Thursday night, Evan and Tiki were left trying to identify where it all went wrong for a team coming into the season with a record-high payroll and World Series aspirations.
Tiki says it likely starts in the clubhouse.
"You can't just buy happiness with money," Tiki said. "You have to earn it. This team doesn't have the right chemistry. The team has been lacking leadership. Why are they so underachieving? Literally everybody is having a down year…it's an anomaly when one guy does. An investigation is needed when every one of them, except for Nimmo…is down.
"When guys underperform, it's not because they all of a sudden suck…not everyone just walks off a cliff at the same time at varying ages, from 29 to 34. It just doesn't happen. Something is askew. I've heard this from different people who are closer to the Mets than I am, and I didn't want to buy it. But when you see it month over month…something is not quite right."
The Mets have publicly all stood by each other during the trying season, but Tiki has his suspicions that things just might not be as cohesive as they need to be in Queens, and if the team can't band together, the manager may be the next to go.
"I can't put my finger on it," Tiki said. "And if Buck can't, then Buck might lose his job because of it."
