Happy deGrom Day…almost!
Jacob deGrom is set to return to the Mets on Tuesday, almost 13 months to the day since he threw his last MLB pitch, and make his season debut against Washington – and even as a Yankees fan, BT understands the magnitude of it.
"If I'm a Mets fan, I'm going to bed tonight with visions of deGrom in my head, and I get up and it's deGrom day? How pumped are you to wake up tomorrow knowing you're going to sit down and watch your boy go back to the mound and inject himself in the middle of a pennant race?" BT asked producer and huge Mets fan Pete Hoffman on Monday.
The answer is one that may have only been reserved for Hoff's wedding day, or the birth of his children.
"It's strange to say, but I'm getting butterflies. It feels that good," Hoff said. "We've talked all season about how the Mets don't need deGrom to make a deep run, but it's been a special season, and him coming back is just going to add to it, to make it feel bigger and better. It's special times 1000."
BT thinks that "if he's deGrom," Jake's return is just as big if not bigger than the Mariners getting Luis Castillo or the Yankees getting Frankie Montas.
"Anyone who has watched him pitch knows that when deGrom is right, he is utterly untouchable, and if you get back 85 percent of that guy? Wow," BT said.
And then Hoff has to ruin it.
"Which means that the offense is about to take a nosedive," Hoff said, to the dismay of Tiki and Tierney. "When the aces touch the mound, the offense goes away. Has Scherzer won a game since he's been back? The offense completely disappears when they know they have someone reliable on the mound."
BT had to take Pete to task for that thought, and then chastised his producer.
"The fact that you sabotage me giving praise to the Mets and trying to rally Mets fans? You should be ashamed of yourself!" BT scoffed at Hoff. "That's weak and small-minded…be better than that!"
Hopefully deGrom Day goes closer to BT's thoughts than Pete's!
