Gio saw some Yankee fans trolling the Mets after Carlos Correa signed with the Twins on Tuesday, but he says those taunts miss the mark of the facts.
"A lot of Yankee fans that were celebrating this yesterday going, 'Oh, is Steve Cohen still the king? Are the Mets still the team in New York?'" Gio said. "And all these things because we were so excited about Carlos Correa being signed.
"I think that where you can criticize the Mets is Steve Cohen probably jumped the gun a little bit on that trip in Hawaii, assuming that the San Francisco Giants were probably backing out for illegitimate reasons, and said, 'I'm gonna go and scoop him up because he's the missing piece.' It seemed to be a little bit ahead of where he should have been mentally."
Sure, Mets fans celebrated the reported addition of the biggest bat left on the free agent market, one who could fill the team's biggest need as a dynamic bat in the middle of the order, but trolling the team under the guise of Cohen not putting his money where his mouth is, that's just inaccurate.
"I think maybe you can criticize a Met fan or someone like me that was screaming about it being so happy, not waiting to see how the physical played out because of what happened in San Francisco," Gio daid. "But to sit here and think that Steve Cohen now is going to be frugal or backed out of this deal because of the luxury tax or didn't want to pay the money or now all of a sudden Steve Cohen is scared to spend that, that is nonsense. Nonsense.
"I'm disappointed, there's no doubt about it…Now we're still talking about still needing to fill another hole in the lineup, which I don't think they'll be able to do this offseason, which is frustrating. But I don't blame Steve Cohen and the Mets for not going that extra mile, because clearly, something was really wrong with that physical."
