WFAN was on site for Mets Amazin’ Day at Citi Field on Saturday, and talked about the upcoming season with several current and former members of the team as spring training draws closer.
Sal Licata and Joe Benigno hosted a three-hour show at the stadium, welcoming in guests that included Clay Holmes, Brandon Nimmo, Carlos Mendoza, and Darryl Strawberry.
Holmes, the newest member of the rotation, talked about building up the organization to the point where New York isn’t owned by his former team, the Yankees, any longer.
“That’s the vision here,” Holmes said. “I think that’s what I want to be a part of. There’s good leadership, good players. people are expecting to see a lot of winning over here with the Mets. There’s room for both to be great in their own way. We’re in two different leagues. But, I think the vision here is that there’s a really lot of good things ahead for the Mets.
I wanted to be a part of it.”
Nimmo talked about his foot injury down the stretch of the 2024 season, and his desire to be a Met for life, and potentially become a rare position player to spend his entire career in Queens.
“One of the intriguing things about coming back to the Mets was spending your whole career with them, and it was something that came into play when we were making decisions in free agency,” Nimmo said. “I definitely thought about it. I thought, ‘OK, you stay, you stay with the Mets, you have a chance to put your numbers in the rafters, and that's not something that a lot of people get the opportunity to do.”
Pete Alonso was assumed to be a Mets star that could accomplish that feat, but that is seemingly now in peril given the state of his free agency. But if it were up to Nimmo, his and Alonso’s number would be hanging above Citi Field one day.

“I would love, love to see him back,” Nimmo said. “Pete's a good friend of mine. Been a great, great teammate and obviously amazing hitter his whole career. I would love to see him back…I've talked to him and he's loved his time with the Mets and he loves the fanbase and he loves New York.”
Evan Roberts was also on hand to record a live episode of the Rico Brogna podcast, welcoming in special guests such as Mookie Wilson, David Wright, and Bobby Valentine.
